Up In The Air: The Most Terrifying Film Ever!

Apr 07

This weekend I finally got around to seeing Up In The Air, George Clooney’s new movie based on the book by Walter Kirn. (The trailer is below…)

While I found myself enjoying the dark-comedic style, writing, and performances, I must say that certain parts of the film were more terrifying than the most grisly scenes of Paranormal Activity or Jaws. No, there weren’t any ghosts, zombies, or sharks synchronized to special effects and shocking sound effects. Instead, the film quietly focused on something much more tangible and terrifying – the confusion, depression, anger, resentment, and fear that comes from losing your job.

There were a number of almost comical quick-cut montages showing how different people react to the news. But there were also a few longer scenes, placing you in the room with someone who has worked decades at the company, only to learn that they are no longer needed. How will I pay the mortgage? What will my kids say? How will I look my wife in the eye? At my age, who will ever hire me???

Having had to let a few people go over the years, it was truly difficult to watch. Remembering my days of being at the mercy of bosses, it was truly terrifying!

What is RelyLocal really all about? Doing everything we can to create as many new jobs across the country that are solely dedicated to promoting local business so that fewer and fewer workers will ever have to hear the horrifying words, “Your position is no longer available with the company.”
